Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 With AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX and Nvidia RTX 3080 Spotted on Geekbench

Test results show that the AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX is just marginally powerful than the Ryzen 9 5900HX.

Just days after spotting the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE with the new AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX and RTX 3060 on Newegg, we’ve now spotted its higher variant with RTX 3080 testing on Geekbench — giving a glimpse of just how powerful the upcoming laptop is going to be, thanks to the new AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX APU.

AMD had announced the Ryzen 9 5980HX as the top-of-the-line processor for laptops back in CES 2021 in January, but it has been curiously missing in action for the first half of the year. The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE could very well be the first laptop to bring the powerful processor into the mainstream.

Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE with AMD Ryzen 9 5980HX and 32GB RAM – Test Result on Geekbench

LaptopUnderBudget spotted the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE with Ryzen 9 5980HX listed on Geekbench, indicating the laptop recently took Geekbench’s reliable CPU benchmark test. It was first spotted by the Leakbench Twitter handle minutes after the scores were published on the database on August 16.

The laptop obtained a single-core score of 1523 and a multi-core score of 8469. In comparison, the Zephyrus Duo 15 with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX scored 1470 on single-core performance and 8355 on multi-core performance. So it can be said the Ryzen 9 5980HX is just marginally more powerful than the previous top-of-the-line offering from AMD for laptops.

The benchmark listing also reveals the laptop was tested on the Turbo power plan, running on Windows 10 Home with 32GB DDR4 RAM in a dual-channel configuration.

Furthermore, the ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE was also spotted taking the OpenCL test on Geekbench, which measures a laptop’s GPU performance. It obtained a high score of 137054, and the spec sheet below clearly mentions the variant tested here has the Nvidia RTX 3080 GPU under the hood with 16GB GDDR5 memory.

We further learned that the Ryzen 9 5980HX has a base frequency of 3.3GHz and a boost frequency of 4.6GHz, which is the same as the Ryzen 9 5900HX. However, the official product page on AMD’s website claims the Ryzen 9 5980HX can go up to 4.8GHz. Both have 8 cores and 16 threads, and 16MB of L3 cache. It could be possible that Asus might be offering the new chipset with the boost clock limited to 4.6GHz by default, but since this is an unlocked processor, users can later tune the performance to hit the higher boost clocks. Both APUs have a TDP rating of 45W+.

Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE Specifications and Features

The Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 is the refreshed version of the company’s first attempt at making a dual-screen gaming laptop. Asus offers the laptop with both 4K and FHD display options. The former comes with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the latter sports a 300Hz refresh rate. The variant we spotted on Geekbench and was previously spotted on Newegg comes with a 15.6-inch 300Hz FHD display along with a second 14-inch FHD touchscreen display on the keyboard deck.

The laptop is offered in multiple GPU variants, starting with the Nvidia RTX 3060 with 6GB GDDR6 memory with 115W TGP (130W with Dynamic Boost 2.0), along with 16GB DDR4 RAM. But the variant we spotted on Geekbench comes with 32GB RAM, and the RTX 3080 under the hood. Going by the specifications, it seems that the only change in hardware in the upcoming Zephyrus Duo 15 SE is the new Ryzen 9 5980HX processor. There are already variants with Nvidia RTX 3070 and RTX 3080 GPUs.

The Zephyrus Duo 15 also features Asus’ proprietary Active Aerodynamic Cooling, which relies on active airflow to keep the components under the chassis cool. It also uses liquid metal from Thin Grizzly instead of regular thermal paste to cool down the CPU, which is probably why the company felt the Zephyrus Duo 15’s design would be the perfect choice to show off AMD’s most powerful processor.
