1. Acer Swift 3 – Our Top Pick

Acer Swift 3 - best laptop under $700 overall

Key Features:

  • Premium aluminum chassis
  • Powerful 8-core AMD CPU
  • Bright and vivid display with 100% sRGB coverage
  • Ultraportable design
  • Long battery life
  • Non-upgradable RAM

The Acer Swift 3 is a compact powerhouse. It offers an extraordinarily capable set of hardware inside a premium-looking chassis and does not compromise on any features, making it the best overall pick under $700 for many users.

It is powered by the newest AMD Ryzen 7 5700U processor, a powerful octa-core chip that puts many expensive laptops to shame with its performance capabilities and efficiency. It can handle everything from casual multitasking to light gaming and even video editing! Accompanying the powerful CPU is an adequate 8GB of RAM and a speedy 512GB of SSD, so its looks might make you think otherwise, but it is a mighty all-rounder machine.

Speaking of looks, the Acer Swift 3 sports a striking all-aluminum chassis with a thin profile of just 0.6″, and it weighs less than 3 pounds, which is excellent considering the power that it packs in.

Moreover, it also features a bright and vivid 14-inch full HD display with 100% sRGB coverage, making it an excellent machine for media consumption and editing.

With all the other prerequisites like a backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner for quick and secure logins, and full-day battery backup, the Acer Swift 3 checks a lot of the right boxes. Therefore it is the best laptop under $700 right now, offering a perfect blend of power and portability.

Hardware Specifications of Acer Swift 3 (SF314-43-R2YY):

ProcessorAMD Ryzen 7 5700U Octa-Core Processor (Turbo up to 4.3GHz)
 Storage512GB NVMe SSD
GraphicsAMD Radeon RX Vega 8 (integrated)
Display14-inch Full HD IPS LED-backlit Display (100% sRGB, 300 nits)
 Operating SystemWindows 10 Home
 Battery LifeUp to 9.5 hours
 Weight2.65 lbs

Our top pick, the Acer Swift 3, offers a great value in terms of performance, features, and overall build quality, but its RAM is sodded on the motherboard. While 8GB RAM is enough for most users but for those who want more RAM or like to have the flexibility of upgrading it in the future so that they are not stuck with low RAM forever, this HP Pavilion 15 is the solution.

It offers almost same specs as the Swift 3, the Ryzen 7 processor, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD. And you also get a great full HD IPS display on this laptop along with a comfortable backlit keyboard and all the ports and slots.

It’s loaded with features and powerful specs, but where this HP Pavilion 15 lacks is build quality. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a really well-built laptop, but since the material used to build its chassis is polycarbonate, it does not feel as premium and rigid as Swift 3’s all-metal construction. In my opinion, that’s not a huge problem.

If you value a better laptop feel, you can get the Acer Swift 3, it’s an excellent package overall, but if you want upgradeable RAM and don’t mind trading the “premium laptop feel” for it, then this HP Pavilion 15 is the right option for you. And you can actually buy it for a little less than the Swift 3, so it makes sense! | Check Price on HP

2. Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15″ – The Best Gaming Laptop Under $700

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 - best gaming laptop under $700

Key Features:

  • High-performance hardware
  • Fast refresh-rate gaming display
  • Good ports selection
  • Good battery life
  • Easily upgradable RAM & storage drive

If you are looking for a gaming laptop that can run all the new games, then this Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15 is the best you can get with the most powerful specs under $700. It is an AMD-powered budget beast with a six-core Ryzen 5 5600H processor and a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU.

It can run even the most demanding games at respectable frame rates in low to medium graphics settings. Moreover, the power of CPU and GPU is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD, which are decent enough for the price, and if you need more power, then both RAM and storage are easily upgradable.

Apart from powerful specs, it also features a 120Hz 15.6-inch full HD display, which adds an extra layer of smoothness to all the games you play. Although the gaming experience on this Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15″ would be nowhere compared to the best gaming laptops under $1000, it’s still praise-worthy for the price.

What I like the most about this gaming laptop is its design. Unlike most other gaming laptops, the design of this laptop isn’t too flashy. Its exterior has just slight hints of a gaming laptop, and it looks like a standard notebook for the most part, which means you can use it in professional environments without looking awkward. It also weighs less than most other gaming laptops, and its battery life is also pretty good, lasting over 6 hours when doing non-intensive tasks.

So, overall the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15″ is not only an excellent gaming laptop under $700, but it is also good enough for work and college if you’re a student.

ProcessorAMD Ryzen 5 5600H Hexa-Core 3.3 GHz Processor (Turbo up to 4.2 GHz)

DEAL ALERT: Dell G15 Gaming Laptop w/ 6-Core i5 & RTX 3050 for $685 from Dell

For those who want to buy a high-performance gaming laptop without shelling a bomb for it, you can get this Dell G15 with Intel Core i5-11260H six-core processor and Nvidia RTX 3050 for under $700 right now!

That’s a great deal since gaming laptops with these specs generally cost around $800.

The powerful CPU and latest ray-tracing supporting GPU make this gaming laptop a very capable machine to play the latest games or for other demanding workloads. Moreover, it features a high refresh rate 120Hz 15.6-inch full HD display, further enhancing the gaming experience on the laptop.

Although it’s a quite large and bulky device at 5.8 pounds, its build quality is fantastic. And its large size helps accommodate all the required ports and allows its high-performing internals to run cool inside.

Overall, it’s an excellent value-for-money deal, and if it’s still available at the time you see it, we recommend it over the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 mentioned above.

The above-mentioned Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15″ and Dell G15 Gaming laptop will efficaciously serve casual gamers, but if you can extend your budget by $100, then the best gaming laptops under $800 come with the latest Nvidia RTX GPUs! They can run all the new games at much better frame rates and deliver life-like graphics in Ray-Tracing-supported games.

3. Asus VivoBook Flip 14 – The Best 2-in-1 Under $700

Asus VivoBook Flip 14 (AMD Variant) - best 2-in-1 laptop under $700

Key Features:

  • Powerful and highly efficient AMD processor
  • Sturdy aluminum chassis
  • Touchscreen with pen support (stylus included in box)
  • Long battery life
  • Upgradable RAM & Storage

Asus’s VivoBook Flip series of laptops is one of the most versatile, powerful, and stylish laptops, which are not only stripped in terms of weight but also in terms of price. The Asus VivoBook Flip 14 is the recently refreshed 2-in-1 laptop that packs powerful hardware in an ultraportable sturdy aluminum chassis.

The device is powered by the latest AMD Ryzen 7 processor coupled with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB of SSD. These are the most powerful specs you can get for the price, and accordingly, it boots Windows and opens up bulky software in just a couple of seconds. And you can also do heavy multitasking on this laptop without any issues.

Moreover, it is very easy to carry and use on the go and features brilliantly crafted hinges, making it easy to convert and use in different modes. The laptop also provides a pretty long battery life, capable enough to break the boundaries of a traditional windows based laptop’s efficacy.

With a long list of connectivity options and features like a fingerprint scanner and a digital pen included inside the box, the VivoBook 14 is a complete package.

But, the only downside to it is its price. It costs slightly more than $700, but we think its extra cost is justified because it is the only 2-in-1 laptop we could find that offers AMD Ryzen 7 processor and still costs near the $700 mark. Most 2-in-1s under $700 come with a Ryzen 5 processor, which is a 6-core CPU, whereas the Ryzen 7 in this 2-in-1 is an 8-core one!

Still, if you absolutely want to buy a 2-in-1 laptop under $700, we have our alternative pick mentioned below.

Hardware Specifications of Asus VivoBook Flip 14 2-in-1 Laptop:

 ProcessorAMD Ryzen 7 5700U Octa-Core 1.8GHz Processor (Turbo up to 4.3 GHz)
 Storage512GB Solid State Drive
 GraphicsIntegrated AMD Radeon Vega 8
Display14-Inch Full HD Touchscreen with Pen support (Glossy)
 Operating SystemWindows 10 Home
 Battery LifeUp to 9 hours
 Weight3.3 lbs

ALTERNATIVE CHOICE: Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 w/ AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD

The Lenovo Flex 5 14 2-in-1 laptop is our pick for those who cannot spend over $700 on their laptop. It is powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, which is a step down from the Ryzen 7 processor in the Asus VivoBook Flip 14, but it’s still a very capable processor, and you’ll be easily able to do all your everyday work and even play less demanding games or do light editing work on it.

The reason why we chose this 2-in-1 over other options in this price range is because it offers 16GB of RAM. Most 2-in-1s have RAM sodded on the motherboard, and this one has it too, but it has enough RAM that you wouldn’t feel the need to upgrade it throughout its lifetime. On the other hand, storage on the laptop is managed by a 256GB SSD, which is decent, but if you need more, it is upgradeable.

With an excellent 14-inch full HD IPS touch display, comfortable backlit keyboard, and all the ports and the convenience of the fingerprint scanner, the Flex 5 14 is an excellent 2-in-1 for the price. And, if you love doodling or taking notes with the pen, it comes with an Active Pen inside the box! What more can you ask for the price? | $699 $620.00 from Amazon

Despite such a slim design, it still packs inside powerful hardware to get you going with almost anything you throw at it. It is powered by a six-core AMD Ryzen CPU and has a dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX450 GPU. This powerful hardware fitted inside such a slim and lightweight chassis is what makes this laptop stand out in the segment.

Its 14-inch Full HD display with slim bezels is beautiful, and it has an anti-glare coating on its screen, making it easier on the eyes during prolonged work sessions. Moreover, it’s the most color-accurate screen you can get at this price point, so if you are looking for a budget laptop for photo editing or video editing, then this is the best option right now.

However, if you don’t have to do the color-sensitive editing work, then the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 (our gaming laptop pick) is more powerful and will be able to handle more complex edits and render videos faster.

But if the thin and light form factor is important for you, then the Asus ZenBook 14 is an excellent value offering laptop for the price. It is powerful, lightweight, and its battery also lasts an entire workday. It’s a very well-suited machine for creative professionals, and it’s also a perfect match for students who want their laptops to be powerful enough for some gaming between project work.

If you are looking for a portable machine that you can carry in your backpack every day, this laptop is definitely not for you because it has large dimensions and is heavy. But, if you want a laptop that can replace your desktop at home or office or if you prefer working on a large display in general, then this is the best 17-inch laptop you can buy for under $700 right now.

It has an Intel Core i5 quad-core processor inside, along with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD, which is a decent setup for everyday work. And thanks to the integrated Iris Xe graphics, you’ll also be able to do some minor photo editing or video editing work or even play some good old games on it.

Speaking of typing, the Asus VivoBook S17 offers a backlit keyboard, which is great if you often find yourself working in the dark.

If we talk about the performance, then it’s going to be very similar between the above-mentioned HP 17-inch laptop and this one. But if you are the kind of person who likes to store a lot of movies, music files, and games on your laptop, then this is going to be a better choice for you because it offers a secondary 1TB of HDD alongside 128GB of primary SSD.

So, these are all the differences between the previously mentioned HP and this Asus 17-inch laptop. You can get either based on your requirements and budget. Both offer great value for what they cost. | Check price of Asus VivoBook S17 on Amazon

    1. I would recommend you to get the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 laptop. It has got six-core AMD processor and Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU, which is enough horsepower for 4K video editing. It does not have a color-accurate display, though, and you probably won’t find laptop that has both powerful hardware and color-accurate display in this price range.

  1. Hi, I’m looking for a sleek laptop that could handle some light photo and video editing. I’m hoping for something fast with at least 8gb RAM at a budget price.

    1. Hi,
I think the Acer Swift 3 would be perfect for you. It can handle light photo and video editing without any problems. However, its display is not color accurate so there’s that.

  2. Hi, I’m looking for a laptop with a color-accurate screen for graphic designing in $700-$800 price range.

    1. Have a look at the HP ENVY x360 laptop with AMD. It is an affordable laptop with great display and performance to handle the designing jobs.

  3. Hi Mike,
I am looking for an affordable laptop for my college using. As I study Analytics, I have to use programs such as Python, R or Java. Can you recommend a laptop under $700 that meets my requirements?
    Thanks a lot!

    1. Hi,
I would recommend you to buy the Acer Aspire E 15 laptop for yourself. It comes with newest specs that are capable enough to handle programming and its battery life is also very good. It lasted for 7 and a half hours in our tests so it will be good for college.

      1. Thanks!
However, I’m looking for a lightweight laptop because I need to travel with it a lot. Do you have any other suggestions?

        1. If you want a lightweight laptop then I think the Acer Swift 3 will be the best option. It has current gen hardware and can last up to 10 hours on a single charge.

          1. No offense I know I have less experience but why do you always suggest the laptops with low GHz?

          2. The laptops which I suggested have new 8th Gen CPUs. They have low base clock frequency but when required they can turbo boost to provide that extra punch. The i5-8250U on the Acer laptops that I have suggested above has base clock frequency of 1.6 GHz however when required it can boost itself up to whopping 3.4 GHz. And, not to forget they are ‘quad-core’ processors. So, they are lot more powerful than we actually think it is.

You might think that why these processors have low base clock frequency? Well, that’s for the better battery backup. While surfing web or editing docs you don’t need much power so CPU provides the required power by running at lower speeds and saves power. And, when you play games or do anything that requires more CPU power, it turbo boosts and provides required power (of-course that compromises battery life).

I hope this answers all your doubts.

  4. Well it seems aspire e15 I good looking for my work but I would like to see what u would say as I’m more working on 3d graphics, rendering and programming, and I would also like to play some latest game such as bf1 at decent performance, well maybe lightweight and not to bulky cause I’m bringing it to school and also maybe upgradable for future upgrade.any suggestion?

    1. Hi,
The Acer Aspire E15 is a very good laptop for light gaming and 3D graphics rendering works but if you can spend up to $730 then I would recommend you to buy the Acer Swift 3 laptop. It has quad-core Intel Core i5-8250U 8th Gen processor which is far more faster than the i7-7500U on Aspire E15. It also has dedicated Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU and has 8GB of RAM. Its hardware is upgradable and it weighs just 3.8 pounds! Best thing – Acer Swift 3 is on discount at Amazon right now. | Check out its current price on Amazon

    1. Hi Dan,

You can buy Acer Aspire E15, it has 8X DVD drive. Lenovo Thinkpad E570, HP 15-au018wm and Dell Inspiron i5767 are other options with DVD drive from the aforementioned list.

  5. Mike,
I wanna to know the best laptop for my college using..Actually i need such a laptop which i can play a better video.

    1. Hi Laura,
All the laptops in $700 price range will be able to run Minecraft without any problems because all of them are well-specced. If you want me to pick one for you then Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575G-75MD looks pretty solid laptop to me. It has dedicated graphics card and it also has the latest Kaby Lake Intel processor inside. I think you should go with it if you’re a power user otherwise for Minecraft and other normal uses all the laptops are good.

  6. These laptops are really good! I was looking for a laptop to take to school and I am going with the HP Envy m6 from the list. It seems perfect for my works and its light weight too. Thank you so much for making this list.

    1. Thanks for the kind words Sarah. Yes, HP Envy m6 is nice portable 2-in-1 laptop and it will be perfect for your school requirements. Great pick.
