Overall, the Acer Aspire 5 is one of the most powerful laptops you can lay your hands on in this price range. If you can extend your budget to $650, you can buy the Acer Aspire 5 with the newest 12th Gen Intel Core i7 processor from Acer’s online store.

It will be a much more capable laptop than the above-mentioned Core i5 variant and also faster than most other laptops mentioned below. Furthermore, the high-performance 10-core CPU is paired with an adequate 16GB RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, so it’s a pretty powerful machine.

Besides powerful specs, all the features remain the same as the above-mentioned Acer Aspire 5 variant. You get the same 15.6-inch full HD IPS display on this laptop as well, along with the full-size backlit keyboard and all the ports and slots.

2. Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14″ – An under $500 option

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 budget laptop for under $500

Key Features:

  • 6-Core AMD Processor
  • SSD storage
  • Backlit keyboard
  • Upgradable RAM & Storage
  • Best bang for the buck

While most of the laptops we’ll talk about in this guide cost between $500-$600, we’ve got you covered if you have an even lower budget. The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14″ is meant for really tight budgets, but it doesn’t compromise on the performance. That’s more or less all that one needs with a budget of less than $500, right?

Well, this Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14″ offers much more than just powerful specs!

So, it packs an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U—an excellent low-power consuming 7nm CPU, along with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD storage. Most laptops at this price cheap out with a slow hard drive, but the SSD storage on the IdeaPad 3 14 makes all the difference. With fast boot times and instant app launches, this will feel way more powerful for its price, and the in-built privacy features like a webcam shutter, backlit keyboard, and thin screen bezels will make it even harder not to choose this laptop.

Frankly, this is a great value-for-money offering from Lenovo. It offers performance and features that are right in line with other laptops on this list while costing almost $100 less than them.

Hardware Specifications of Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14″:

ProcessorAMD Ryzen 5 5500U Hexa Core 2.1GHz APU (Turbo up to 4.0GHz)
RAM8GB DDR4 3200MHz – 4GB Sodded + 4GB SODIMM (Upgradable)
Storage256GB NVMe SSD (Upgradable)
GraphicsAMD Radeon Integrated
Display14-Inch FHD IPS Matte Screen

DEAL ALERT: Lenovo IdeaPad 3 15 w/ bigger 15-inch FHD display & spacious 512GB SSD for $639.99 $575.99 from Amazon

If you prefer standard 15-inch sized laptops over 14-inch machines, then the bigger sibling of the above-mentioned Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14 is available at a great discounted price right now. It’ll get you a slightly bigger 15-inch full HD display, which will feel roomier when working with multiple windows side by side. Also, it features a full-size backlit keyboard with a dedicated Numpad, so if you have to crunch numbers all day long, it will make your life easier.

Inside, it features the same AMD Ryzen 5 5500U processor paired with the 8GB of RAM, so there wouldn’t be any difference in speed and performance of this laptop in comparison to the IdeaPad 3 14. However, it does come with a bigger capacity, 512GB SSD giving you more space to store your files.

So, if you want a bigger display, Numpad on the keyboard, and more storage space, and don’t mind trading a bit of portability for that, then IdeaPad 3 15 is also worth considering option under $600 right now.

3. Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 – Best For Students

Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2 - most recommended laptop for students

Key Features:

  • Premium design
  • Bright & color-accurate touchscreen
  • Excellent keyboard & touchpad
  • Long battery life
  • Pure Windows experience (Bloat-free)

The Surface Laptop Go 2 isn’t the harbinger of high performance, but the design is far more premium, and the display is a lot better than any laptop you can get for under $600. The Surface Laptop Go 2 runs on the latest Windows 11, and is available in four distinctly different colors. You get a one-touch sign-in with Windows Hello-powered fingerprint sensor, and it’s super portable with a 12.4-inch touchscreen display that is just perfect for shuttling between classes and taking down notes.

A smaller option for students is the Surface Go 3, featuring a 10.5-inch touchscreen display with pen input. Pair it with a type keyboard and it is also a great option for students but this one’s going to be slower than the Surface Laptop Go 2 with the Intel Pentium Gold residing under the hood.

Both offer 8GB of low power memory and up to 256GB SSD, but for the budget, you can only get up to 128GB on the Surface Laptop Go 2. We wouldn’t recommend these Surface devices for power users who’ll need access to professional apps like the Adobe Suite. However, for attending online classes, doing homework, and browsing the web, the Surface Laptop Go 2 and Surface Go 3 tablet with type cover are easily the most comfortable, ergonomic, and portable laptops you can buy, that are especially aimed at students.

Hardware Specifications of Microsoft Surface Laptop Go 2:

ProcessorIntel Core i5-1135G7 Quad-Core (Up to 4.2GHz)
RAM8GB LPDDR4x Memory (Not upgradable)
Storage128GB SSD

4. Dell Inspiron 16 5620

Dell Inspiron 16 5620 High Performance Laptop

Key Features:

  • Newest & Powerful Intel processor
  • Beautiful display with tiny bezels
  • Premium aluminum chassis
  • Backlit keyboard with numpad
  • 1080p webcam
  • Lightweight

The Dell Inspiron 16 5620 is easily one of the most powerful 16-inch laptops you can get without shelling a bomb. Its 12th Gen Intel Core i5-1235U processor is a cut above the usual Intel and AMD processors you get for this price and comes with 10-cores, making it capable of handling performance-oriented tasks well.

Accordingly, this Dell Inspiron 16 laptop can easily handle some of the most resource-intensive apps and software for office use. The integrated Iris Xe GPU is also fit for running a few casual games, but more importantly, it’s the laptop’s display that differentiates it from the rest. The WVA panel with an anti-glare coating is perfect for outdoor use, and the large screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and fully scaled-down bezels makes it ideal for productivity and watching movies and shows.

There’s a bundled USB-C port for plugging in a 4K display or charging the laptop, along with two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports, 1 HDMI 1.4 port, and an SD card slot. You also get Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, 2x2W stereo speakers, and a 1080p webcam. All this, and yet the laptop weighs just 4 pounds.

Hardware Specifications of Dell Inspiron 16 5620:

5. Acer Aspire 5 – Good Value for Money

Acer Aspire 5 (2021, AMD) - Value for money notebook under $600

Key Features:

  • Powerful 6-core CPU
  • IPS display with great viewing angles
  • Full size Backlit keyboard with Numpad
  • Plenty of ports
  • Long battery life

The Acer Aspire 5 also has a model with Intel Core i5-1135G7, but we recommend the one with the Ryzen processor because it’s a lot better. Yes, you do miss out on the fingerprint sensor on the AMD variant, but the Ryzen 5 5500U is capable of defeating even the 11th Gen Intel Core i7-1165G7. That’s how much better the performance is. And as most users look for reliable and stable performance, the AMD edition of the Acer Aspire 5 is an easy recommendation to make.

The laptop features three USB-3.0 ports and one USB-2.0 port, an ethernet port, HDMI out, and a USB-C port. You even get a backlit keyboard and a decently bright and sharp display. It’s also quite light at 3.88 pounds. Acer promises 11 hours of battery life on this one. But, in real life, you would get around 8-9 hours, which is still plenty. | Read our full review of Acer Aspire 5

DEAL ALERT: Acer Swift 3 w/ AMD Ryzen 7 5700U, 8GB RAM & 512GB SSD for $749.99 $554.99 from Amazon

If the Acer Swift 3 is still available at the discounted rate of $609, we recommend it over any other laptop mentioned on this list. The Acer Swift 3 with an eight-core Ryzen 7 5700U processor is the most powerful laptop you can buy for the price. Yes, it’s not exactly under $600, but it’s just a few bucks more, and we insist you spend and get it before the deal expires. Why? Firstly, it’s an all-metal built laptop which alone makes it a step above the other laptops under $600 that are mostly plastic built. Apart from that, you also get plenty of ports to connect your peripherals, a comfortable backlit keyboard and a beautiful looking 1080p IPS display. | Read our full review of 2021 Acer Swift 3

6. Asus ZenBook 14 – Best For Photo/Video Editing

Asus ZenBook 14 - best laptop for photo and video editing under $600

Key Features:

  • Dedicated GPU
  • Bright display with good color coverage
  • Backlit keyboard and large touchpad
  • Feather light design
  • Great bargain overall

If you’re looking to do more for less, then a laptop fit for editing photos and videos or light gaming is what you’re looking for. The Asus ZenBook 14 fits that bill perfectly. It is the only laptop in the $600 price range to come with a discrete GPU, and it also has a relatively color-accurate display!

Running the show is the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U six-core processor that pairs well with Nvidia’s entry-level MX450 GPU. The discrete GPU makes ZenBook 14 a lot more capable than most laptops under $600 that rely on CPU’s integrated graphics for heavy tasks. It can run most modern games at decent 60FPS and even allow for light video editing on Adobe Premier. Its 14-inch Full HD display can only get bright up to 250-nits, but it is one of the most color-accurate panels you’ll find on a laptop in this price range covering 100% sRGB gamut.

There’s also a Core i7 variant with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage, but the price for that breaches the $1000, at which price you’ll get the latest gems like the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 or the Lenovo Legion 5. But if you have to stick to the $600 budget, the ZenBook 14 will do the job easily. Just get a portable SSD storage to store the video files you’ll be editing on this machine because its 256GB SSD will fill up quickly.

Hardware Specifications of Asus ZenBook 14:

ProcessorAMD Ryzen 5 5500U (6-cores 12 threads, 2.1 – 4.0GHz)
RAM8GB LPDDR4x 4266MHz (Not-upgradable)
Storage256GB PCIe SSD (Upgradable)
GraphicsDedicated Nvidia GeForce MX450 2GB DDR5
Display14-Inch Widescreen Full HD LED-backlit 100% sRGB Matte Screen (250-nits)
Operating SystemWindows 11 Home 64-bit

Weight2.8 lbs

7. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 – Best 2-in-1 Laptop

Lenovo Flex 5 14 (AMD) 2-in-1 Laptop

Key Features:

  • Elegant design & tough build
  • Power pack performance
  • 10-point touchscreen with pen support
  • Comfortable backlit keyboard
  • Good amount of ports
  • Fingerprint-enabled logins & privacy shutter on webcam

Usually, when you are shopping for a 2-in-1/convertible laptop under $600, you’ve to make few compromises. However, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 breaks that stereotype and packs the most punch you can get in a laptop at this price range, that too, without compromising on any essential features!

It’s one of the most versatile thin and light laptops you can buy for under $600 with a 360-degree hinge that is easy and ergonomic to use. You can keep the display at any angle you want to watch content, doodle with the included stylus, or give a presentation to a group of people without the keyboard coming in the way. Speaking of the display, it features a 14 inch display with full HD resolution and touch support. It is not the brightest or the most color-accurate panel, but it’s good enough for casual work and media consumption.

Lenovo promises 12 hours of battery life, and the Ryzen 5 5500U, as mentioned earlier, gives strong competition to even more expensive Intel-powered laptops when it comes to multi-core performance. It could even run few casual games and resource-intensive apps like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom with ease.

So overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 is a fantastic 2-in-1 laptop under $600 that is perfect for anyone who thinks they can benefit from a versatile laptop/tablet in a one-device kind of computer. | Read our full review of Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14

DEAL ALERT: HP Pavilion x360 14″ w/ 11th Gen Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD for $779 $609 from HP (Pen included)

If you don’t mind spending to the extreme of your $600 budget, then the HP Pavilion x360 14 is an equally capable and much premium-looking alternative to the above-mentioned Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14. It comes with a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, which is paired to the same amount, 16GB of RAM and 256GB SSD as the IdeaPad Flex 5 14.

Apart from great performing specs, it also offers an excellent 14-inch 1080p touchscreen display with pen support, and HP also includes Pen with it, so you don’t have to spend extra.

The backlit keyboard on the Pavilion x360 14 is also very comfortable, and its trackpad is also big enough in size and smooth to operate.

Overall, the above-mentioned IdeaPad Flex 5 14 is slightly faster with a 6-core AMD CPU, but you wouldn’t notice any difference between them with everyday tasks. So, if you want to buy a premium and professional-looking 2-in-1 laptop, then this HP Pavilion x360 14 is available for a great price right now.

8. HP Pavilion Aero 13 – Best Ultrabook

HP Pavilion Aero 13 - The best ultrabook under $600

Key Features:

  • All-metal chassis
  • 16:10 display
  • Satisfying clicky backlit keyboard
  • Decent amount of ports for a thin and light laptop
  • WiFi 6 Support
  • Full day battery life

The HP Pavilion Aero 13 is one of the best ultrabooks you can buy under $600 for business use, especially if you are a frequent flyer. The lightweight chassis and the compact 13-inch display make this perfect for on-the-go computing. With the powerful and highly efficient 5000 series AMD Ryzen 5 CPU, the Pavilion Aero 13 offers excellent performance, while the integrated Radeon graphics makes it possible even to complete a few levels of a casual game when you’re bored. It features audio by Bang & Olufsen with dual bottom-firing speakers and promises 11 hours of battery life. It supports Wi-Fi 6 and comes with an integrated HD webcam with dual-mics suiting well to those working from home.

The laptop weighs just 2.2 pounds and features a backlit keyboard, and is perfect for office use. You even get a USB-C port with a display port 1.4 support to plug in a second display or high-speed storage, a microSD card reader, and legacy ports like two USB-A and HDMI ports!

Its 13-inch full HD+ display is very bright, and its tall 16:10 aspect ratio helps to accommodate more content vertically, resulting in less scrolling and more productivity. The laptop takes good care of user privacy and is offered with a premium all-metal lightweight design, fit for traveling business executives.

Hardware Specifications of HP Pavilion Aero 13:

ProcessorAMD Ryzen 5 5625U Hexa-Core (Turbo up to 4.3 GHz)
RAM16GB DDR4 3200MHz (Non-upgradable)
Storage256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
GraphicsAMD Radeon Vega 7 integrated

9. Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 – Best Gaming Laptop Under $600

Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 inch Gaming Laptop

Key Features:

  • High performance 6-core AMD CPU & dedicated Nvidia GPU
  • Fast refresh rate display for smooth in-game visuals
  • Powerful cooling system
  • Lot of ports
  • Upgradeable RAM and storage drive
  • 3-months Xbox Game Pass Free

The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15 is among the very few gaming laptops available in this price range that’s actually worth purchasing if you want to play the latest games.

It offers respectable specs for gaming for the price, and it has a fast 120Hz refresh rate full HD 15-inch display, which truly maximizes the experience of gaming on this laptop.

It does not have fancy RGBs, and you shouldn’t even expect it to have at this price, but it does have a backlit keyboard which is very comfortable to type, and it lights up in the standard white light just like a normal work-oriented laptop. The design of the laptop is also quite muted and non-gaming laptops like, so you can even purchase this gaming laptop as your work laptop to use in the office and play games on it in the evening when you are home.

If we talk about the performance, it’s good enough for casual gamers. The AMD Ryzen 5 5600H paired with Nvidia GTX 1650 GPU will run most modern games smoothly at default settings, but with very demanding titles, you’ll have to scale down a few settings to achieve smooth gameplay. If you don’t mind that, then you’ll be more than happy with the gaming performance of this laptop, and as mentioned earlier, its high refresh rate display does the job of icing on the cake.

It is slightly above $600 at the time I am writing, but I’ve seen its price drop below $600 many times during random sales. But, I believe it’s well worth it, even at its current rate.

Hardware Specifications of Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15-inch Laptop:

ProcessorAMD Ryzen 5 5600H 6-Core CPU (Turbo up to 4.2 GHz)
RAM8GB DDR4 3200 MHz (Upgradable)
Storage256GB PCIe M.2 SSD (Upgradable)
GraphicsNvidia GeForce GTX 1650 GPU with 4GB DDR6 VRAM

Operating SystemWindows 11 Home
Battery LifeUp to 8 Hours
Weight4.8 lbs

10. HP 17-cn0025nr – Best 17-inch Laptop

HP 17-cn0025nr 17-inch Laptop Under $600

Key Features:

  • Large 17-inch display
  • Keyboard suitable for people with large hands
  • Good selection of ports
  • Latest WiFi 6 support
  • Good value overall for the price

While most users are satisfied with a 15.6-inch laptop, we won’t judge you for wanting something even larger. But any competent 17-inch laptop usually falls under the gaming category with exorbitant price tags. But not this one. The HP 17t offers just what you’re looking for—a large 17.3-inch display. But the resolution is only HD with 1600 pixels to boot, which is not quite adequate for content consumption but should do well to quench your thirst for large-screen productivity.

The variant around $600 features the Intel Core i5-1135G7, that’s part of Intel’s offering for thin and light laptops and is generally good for everyday use. Just don’t expect to run resource-intensive software or do heavy multitasking, as the 8GB DDR4 RAM tends to fill up quite fast with around 6-7 Chrome tabs open. There’s a cheaper variant with a 1TB HDD, but we’d recommend going for the one with 256GB Solid State Drive, which is exponentially faster than the one with HDD storage.

Hardware Specifications of HP 17t Laptop:

ProcessorIntel Core i5-1135G7 Quad-Core 2.4GHz Processor (Turbo up to 4.2GHz)
RAM8GB DDR4 3200MHz (Upgradable)
Storage256GB SSD (Upgradable)
GraphicsIntel Iris Xe Integrated
Display17.3-Inch HD+ BrightView Screen with 1600 x 900 Resolution
Operating SystemWindows 10 Home 64-bit
Battery LifeUp to 5 Hours
Weight4.5 lbs

Alternative choice: Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17″ with AMD Processor

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17
Lenovo IdeaPad 3 17″ with AMD

If Intel is not your default choice anymore, there are competent 17-inch laptops with AMD processors under $600. The Lenovo IdeaPad 3 is an excellent choice if you belong to Team Red. The Ryzen 5 5500U is one of the most potent mainstream processors you can get this year and easily beats more expensive rivals like the Intel Core i7-1165G7 on benchmark scores. However, the IdeaPad 3 also has the same drawback as the HP — a 17-inch display with just 1600 by 900 pixels resolution, which is a huge mismatch and may create washed-out colors, unsharp details, and the likes. But the bezels are thin, and Lenovo deploys some Eye Care algorithms so the big display would not strain your eyes.

However, if you can get over its low resolution display, the Ryzen 5 5500U makes everything run super smoothly, be it running office apps or catching up on the latest shows and movies. Lenovo also takes a step ahead and includes a physical shutter on the integrated webcam for your peace of mind, and there’s support for the latest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, and choice of ports include one USB-C, two USB-A ports, SD card reader, and an HDMI port. There’s no LAN port on this one, though.

Overall, the IdeaPad 3 offers more storage and a seemingly better processor for power users, and it can also handle some casual gaming.
